What a beautiful fragrance on its own! It begins with an airy hint of rose otto that has a tinge of peppery green top note.

I also get tobacco and chocolate smell. However, they are accompanied by a powdery note that is similar to mimosa (Dealbata variant) and violet leaf. I then get a beautiful earthy smell with an accompanying hay note – more specifically Austrian hay type. If I inhale a bit longer, I also get a dry/powdery vibe, similar to that of (Persian) saffron. I also get a hint of burning wood type smell – a prelude to the incense that is about to drop.

I get about 9 plus hours incense note from this stunner. To me this and Malay Encense (ME) are of the best value Malaysian oils in terms of full-bodied incensiness that one expects from the oils of that region. For a young oil this an excellent deal at this (or any) price range. The incense in it is sparkler than ME. Think of RdM as the viola and ME as the violin – both of which can be concertos on their own.

It becomes a skin scent around 10 hours time. Buy it while it lasts. I intend to make an incense chypre after the recent one (Radiant Chypre). I think this will compliment beautifully with what I have in mind.

Encens Chypre (2014): Tale of A Green Incensed Chypre Sultan Pasha Attars Encens Chypre (2017) Encens Chypre (EC) is a full blown classic chypre, full of animalics, intoxicating florals, unashamedly sensual, spicy and fruity and then some! This is my most favourite chypre. Let me explain why! From the applicator, I get peach, citrus, lots of civet, jasmine and oakmoss. I later detect beeswax/honey like sweet facets that also contribute to its deep incensiness. Sultan made EC as an ode to vintage Mitsuoko extrait - and oakmoss, the most iconic ingredient for chypres. Overall, Mitsuoko extraits (let alone lower concentrates) from 1970s and onwards pale into comparison to this. I have not smelt any earlier version, so cannot compare it to those. Dewaniya (2017) Sultan Pasha Attar

Imagine you are invited in Topkapi Palace in Istanbul by Sultan Mehmed II  somewhere around 1470 . You are sitting in the large domed diwan, where some bakhoor (Hindi oud, myrrh, frankincense, and opoponax) has been burning for a long time at low temperature. Long enough that they have turned the air of the room sweet and smoky. You are sipping some Persian saffron-flavoured tea whilst wearing a blend of medicinal Chinese, incensy Cambodian/Vietnamese and resinous Assamese ouds. Smell of dry herbs and spices wafting from Büyük Çarşı. It is autumn and the air is crisp and cold. So when the sun warms up the area, you get all those aroma whilst sitting there enjoying your tea with some dates and other dry fruits. Âme Sombre (2014) Sultan Pasha Attars

A Saffronic Extravaganza Âme Sombre (G1)  Sultan Pasha Attars   greets me with a heavy dose of saffron – dry, herbal, sparkly and spicy. Spicy and sparkly Persian rose otto and dry frankincense (especially their top notes) provides an extra boost to the saffron’s overall performance from the start. The first 15-20 mins is a saffron lover’s dream - almost as if it is on steroids, highlighting it’s dry, spicy and sombre (yet contemplative) facets with the help of rose, frankincense and tobacco. I can clearly detect some tobacco after about 10 minutes when AS gets drier, where it also adds an earthy quality. Âme Sombre [G1] (2017 Batch) Dry saffron (that we buy from shops) does not laid bare its olfactory wonders like this – or at least, we cannot detect them as they evaporate too quickly since it is not a base material.
